Inside Cyndi Lauper’s Decades-Long Relationship With Rod Stewart

Although Cyndi Lauper and Rod Stewart's early hits came out at two different times, they share more than unique hairdos and iconic singing styles. They've been friends for decades.
Lauper said she first met Stewart for dinner at the Sunset Marquis Hotel in West Hollywood before they appeared on stage together at a 1985 Los Angeles AIDS benefit concert.
Stewart recalled how Lauper made fun of an electric blue suit he wore on stage that year. Lauper told People, "I didn't think it was rock 'n' roll. I said that to him. He was sad."
Stewart and Lauper were together again at the 1988 MTV Video Music Awards. Since then, Stewart and Lauper have toured together in 2017, 2018, and 2023.
Lauper told "Access Hollywood" in 2017, "He's great, one of the great, great rock singers." Stewart added, "We like the same music, and we’re just bouncing off each other."
That same year, Lauper told Today, "Singing with [...] Sir Rod is a big deal to me." In 2018, Stewart told People when they met, "I thought [Lauper] had a soulful voice."
In a 2023 Instagram post, Stewart shared a picture of him with Lauper at the 1988 VMAs. Stewart's post said, "Cyndi's been stealing my hairdo since 1988! Love you, Cyn!"
Also in 2023, Stewart sent Lauper a bottle of his Wolfie's Whisky. She opened the gift on Instagram, sharing a picture of herself with the bottle: "How cool is this!"
