Nearly 11 years after Amy Winehouse was added to that long list of stars who died at 27, the "Valerie" singer is remembered as one of the stand-out personalities that define the past two decades of music. On July 23, 2011, Winehouse was found dead in her home of apparent accidental alcohol poisoning (via Smooth Radio). This came a mere month after she'd canceled a tour, as The Guardian reports. Throughout the years leading up to her death, she'd frequented rehabilitation facilities in an attempt to combat her battle with addiction. Amy Winehouse explained to The Sun after "Back to Black's" initial release that, "'Back to Black' is when you've finished a relationship and you go back to what's comfortable for you. My ex went back to his girlfriend and I went back to drinking and dark times," (via Song Facts). "Back to Black" started at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 album in 2006. The album earned Winehouse the title of highest-debuting British female artist in the history of the U.S. albums chart and sold over 5.5 million copies in 2007. She also won five Grammys, including best new artist, record of the year, and best pop vocal album, as Culturess notes.
"I feel like I've come to the realization that life is short, you know? You have to live in the moment. You have to seize the day," Winehouse shared with MTV News in 2007.
