Simon Le Bon is the talented vocalist and charismatic face of the enduring pop rock band Duran Duran. If it wasn't for him, '80s pop rock might not have the danceable new wave and synth pop sound that helped define the era. He was born in Hertfordshire, England, 68 years ago today on October 27, 1958.

Simon Le Bon's life wasn't always about new wave pop. Before Duran Duran, he played in the punk band Dog Days, which seems almost unthinkable for a pop rocker who was always so well dressed. But once Duran Duran's second album, "Rio," hit No. 6 on the Billboard 200 in March 1983, there was no way he could feasibly do anything else. It sent Le Bon and his bandmates on a bullet train to pop rock stardom that would see them dominating radio stations, dance floors, and even MTV.

Since that early success, Le Bon has been nominated for two different Grammys with Duran Duran and won them both. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inducted the band into the ranks of rock legends in 2022, not to mention the band's numerous chart successes throughout the 1980s. In the end, it was this popularity that allowed Simon Le Bon and Duran Duran's signature style of pop rock to impact the genre as heavily as it did.

How Simon Le Bon impacted '80s pop rock

With Simon Le Bon as the focal point of the band, Duran Duran's music helped cement the era's popular rock into a high-energy, danceable style that made your body move in a way the bluesy arena rock of the '70s just couldn't match. This was a form of new wave meant for hyping up parties and getting the dance clubs moving. Even so, Le Bon's charisma added something to the equation that the band's music couldn't do on its own.

The early-to-mid '80s was the start of the MTV era, and music videos were becoming a more common way for listeners to consume popular music and a key promotional venue for propelling that music to the top. No longer could artists hide behind a paper sleeve and vinyl grooves. In order for pop rock to take the main stage, it needed to be on-screen, it needed to be captivating, and it needed to be glamorous. Duran Duran's frontman's charisma helped make it so. In fact, many now consider the band MTV's first superstars, and it didn't hurt that Le Bon was one of the era's heartthrobs, whose posters fans used to line their walls.

This MTV popularity mixed with their extremely danceable sound led them to climb the charts at several points in the '80s, which in turn drove the decade's pop rock to often gravitate in their direction. This is a common theme in entertainment, and you can see it in the shift in sound of popular music, where a band will make it big and others start trying to sound more like them with hopes of gaining the same success. If it wasn't for Simon Le Bon and Duran Duran, music of the 1980s certainly wouldn't have sounded the same.
