Sammy Sosa Is Worth A Lot More Than You Think

These days, Sammy Sosa might not look anything like he used to during his active playing career, but the baseball great's considerable achievements remain etched in the annals of the sport. To be fair, these achievements are both famous and infamous in nature. As ESPN notes, Sosa is one of only a handful of players who have achieved over 600 home runs during his career, but on the other hand, he is allegedly a bit of a rule bender, to the point that some consider him to be one of the dirtier players in baseball history. Oh, and as Rick Morrissey of ESPN tells us, there's also that whole question about whether he took performance-enhancing drugs (like many suspect) or not (like he has repeatedly stated).

Still, regardless of what you think of Sosa, there's no denying that he had an absolutely huge career, and the fortune that he's amassed reflects his success. In fact, Sammy Sosa may very well be worth a lot more than you think.

Sammy Sosa hit a financial home run

Trying to guess the net worth of an athlete is always risky, because while the famous ones tend to make absolute truckloads of cash, they also have a bad habit of losing all their money. Take Mike Tyson, for instance. The heavyweight legend earned at least $300 million during his boxing career, but his estimated 2020 net worth is a comparatively meager $3 million. He's far from the only one, too. For various and often dramatic reasons, famous athletes from NBA greats Delonte West and Dennis Rodman to tennis aces Boris Becker and Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario have found themselves more or less in the red.

Sammy Sosa, on the other hand, isn't about to go broke in a hurry, seeing as Celebrity Net Worth guesstimates the Hall of Famer's net worth in 2020 at $70 million. While this is a very impressive fortune, it could potentially be even higher. According to Baseball Reference, Sosa's total career salary was a little over $124 million
