The Exotic Pet Leonardo DiCaprio Has Owned Might Surprise You

Few actors in Hollywood are as committed to the environment as Leonardo DiCaprio. In 1998, the actor launched the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, which supports environmental causes all over the world (via WWF). According to The Guardian, the actor led a $43 million pledge to support the Galápagos Islands' preservation this year. The South American island is home to 54 threatened species, including giant tortoises and marine iguanas.

In the last decades, fans have seen DiCaprio support several environmental causes. He also doesn't hide his love for pets. The actor has at least three dogs at home, and the most famous of them is a French bulldog named Django. The breed is one of the most popular in the U.S. (via BBC). Django reportedly travels with him on private jets all over the world.

However, DiCaprio's dogs had to share their home with an exotic animal the actor has owned.

Leonardo DiCaprio has owned a tortoise

Although Leonardo DiCaprio is often seen walking his dogs, they are not the only pets in his life. According to People, DiCaprio has owned an African spurred tortoise, also known as a Sulcata tortoise. The actor bought his exotic pet for $400 at the North American Reptile Breeders Conference and Trade Show in 2010. During the event, the actor asked questions about how he could take care of his new pet. There is no information if DiCaprio stills own the tortoise or if it was sent to a sanctuary.

According to the Riverview Park & Zoo, the African spurred tortoise can live up to 70 years in the wild and up to 100 years in captivity. Adult tortoises can grow up to 30 inches and weigh up to 180 pounds. They are one of the most common tortoises kept as pets, and their housing needs will depend on the animal's size. However, they are easily stressed, and owners should avoid carrying them around.
